1. God’s WORLD - to let your mind focus on all that is “very good” in the earth. To curate a view of the world, with special attention to the good, the beautiful, and true.
2. God’s BLESSINGS - Did you know we are prone to focus on the negative instead of the positive? In fact we are prone to think about the negative 14 times more often than the positive. We need a day to remember and count our blessings. God is good! So so good!! We have so much we don’t deserve. We use sabbath to delight and be grateful.
3. God HIMSELF - This is an interesting one because many of us probably don’t really know how to do that. We know how to fear God, or obey God or pray to God, or think about God, but most of us do not know how to enjoy God. 

“If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath and from doing as you please on my holy day, if you call the Sabbath a delight and the Lord’s holy day honorable and if you honor it by not going your own way and not doing as you please or speaking idle words then you will find your joy in the Lord, and I will cause you to ride in triumph on the heights of the land and to feast on the inheritance of your father Jacob. For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.” -Isaiah 58:13-14 NIV

When Jesus arrived at Bethany, he was told that Lazarus had already been in his grave for four days. Bethany was only a few miles down the road from Jerusalem, and many of the people had come to console Martha and Mary in their loss. When Martha got word that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him. But Mary stayed in the house. Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask.” Jesus told her, “Your brother will rise again.” “Yes,” Martha said, “he will rise when everyone else rises, at the last day.” Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die. Do you believe this, Martha?” “Yes, Lord,” she told him. “I have always believed you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who has come into the world from God.” Then she returned to Mary. She called Mary aside from the mourners and told her, “The Teacher is here and wants to see you.” So Mary immediately went to him. Jesus had stayed outside the village, at the place where Martha met him. When the people who were at the house consoling Mary saw her leave so hastily, they assumed she was going to Lazarus’s grave to weep. So they followed her there. When Mary arrived and saw Jesus, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died.” When Jesus saw her weeping and saw the other people wailing with her, a deep anger welled up within him, and he was deeply troubled. “Where have you put him?” he asked them. We learned that we must look at this old mantra in a different direction: Jesus takes your side against your sin, not against you because of your sin. 1. In solitude I WAIT and LISTEN to God

• We listen to the Scriptures
• We listen to the circumstances of our lives
• We listen to the silent whispers of our hearts
• AND we listen to the thoughts that come to our mind from God Himself… 

But when you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father in private. Then your Father, who sees everything, will reward you. -Matthew 6:6 NLT

• Whether big or small, have you ever had an encounter with God in solitude? What was that experience like?
• In light of your experience with solitude throughout this practice, what is God doing in you during your "retreating" that you want to carry into your "returning"?

Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted there by the devil. For forty days and forty nights he fasted and became very hungry. During that time the devil came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become loaves of bread.” But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Then the devil took him to the holy city, Jerusalem, to the highest point of the Temple, and said, “If you are the Son of God, jump off! And they will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.’” Jesus responded, “The Scriptures also say, ‘You must not test the Lord your God.’” Next the devil took him to the peak of a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. “I will give it all to you,” he said, “if you will kneel down and worship me.” “Get out of here, Satan,” Jesus told him. “For the Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’” Then the devil went away, and angels came and took care of Jesus. -Matthew 4:1-11 NLT

• We encounter the WORLD — when we get a little distance from the noise of the world, we  begin to realize just how many of the norms of our sinful society we have come to accept, how compromised our heart is, how we’ve lost our convictions …  
• We encounter the FLESH — the bent, warped desires in our own heart and body itself all  come up … 
• And we encounter the DEVIL — as demonic thoughts assault our mind.

• Nos encontramos con el MUNDO — cuando nos alejamos un poco del ruido del mundo, comenzamos a darnos cuenta de cuántas de las normas de nuestra sociedad pecaminosa hemos llegado a aceptar, cuán comprometido está nuestro corazón con ellos, y cómo hemos perdido nuestras convicciones...
• Nos encontramos con la CARNE – todos los deseos torcidos y retorcidos en nuestro propio corazón y nuestro mismo cuerpo surgen a la superficie…

• ¿Qué resistencia quizás necesites trabajar para superar al entrar al lugar desierto de la solitud?
• ¿Alguna vez has pensado en el desierto como un lugar de fortaleza? ¿Dónde puedes ver esto suceder en tu propia vida?
• ¿Cómo puede ayudarte en tu práctica de solitud el recordar que la solitud es un lugar de resistir al mundo, la carne y el diablo? 

• BUEN cansancio: la sensación al final de una larga semana, en la que hiciste del mundo un lugar mejor, entregaste tu vida y estás listo para tu Sabbath y descansar y disfrutar de todo lo que Dios te ha dado.
• Cansancio POCO SALUDABLE: no dormir lo suficiente, poco margen y mucho estrés. Es manejable, pero estás al límite.
• Cansancio PELIGROSO, donde has perdido el contacto con tu alma y con tu Dios, y eres presa fácil de la tentación.

Entonces Jesús fue con ellos al huerto de olivos llamado Getsemaní y dijo: «Siéntense aquí mientras voy allí para orar». …y comenzó a afligirse y angustiarse. Les dijo: «Mi alma está destrozada de tanta tristeza, hasta el punto de la muerte. Quédense aquí y velen conmigo». Él se adelantó un poco más y se inclinó rostro en tierra mientras oraba: «¡Padre mío! Si es posible, que pase de mí esta copa de sufrimiento. Sin embargo, quiero que se haga tu voluntad, no la mía». –Mateo 26:36-39 NTV

• UNHEALTHY tired: where you’re not sleeping enough, low on margin, high on stress. It’s manageable, but you’re on edge. 
• DANGEROUS tired – where you’ve lost touch with your soul and your God, and you’re easy prey for temptation.  

Then Jesus went with them to the olive grove called Gethsemane, and he said, “Sit here while I go over there to pray.” …and he became anguished and distressed. He told them, “My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” He went on a little farther and bowed with his face to the ground, praying, “My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.”  –Matthew 26:36-39 NLT

• Have you ever encountered God in a specific area or moment of pain? What was that experience like?
• What are the most common ways you distract yourself (or allow yourself to be distracted) from the pain in your life?
• Jesus shows us how to give God our feelings, our desires, and our trust. Which of those do you have the hardest time giving to God? What’s one step you could take to surrender that to Him?

• Solitude IS NOT loneliness: “Loneliness is inner emptiness. Solitude is inner fulfillment.”
• Solitude IS NOT isolation: Isolation is a movement away from relationship; solitude is a movement toward relationship.  
• Solitude IS NOT aloneness: In solitude you’re NOT alone; you’re alone WITH God.  

1. The practice of SOLITUDE is intentional time in the quiet with ourselves and God
2. Solitude has two INPUTS: 1. God and 2. your heart laid open before God
3. Solitude has two COMPANIONS: silence and stillness 

The more intimate a relationship, the more it requires time alone together.

• La solitud NO ES aislamiento: el aislamiento es un alejamiento de la relación; la solitud es un movimiento hacia la relación.
• La solitud NO ES estar sólo: En la solitud NO estás solo; estás solo CON Dios.

1. La práctica de la SOLITUD es un tiempo intencional en silencio con nosotros mismos y con Dios.
2. La solitud tiene dos PARTES: 1. Dios y 2. tu corazón abierto ante Dios.
3. La solitud tiene dos COMPAÑEROS: el silencio y la quietud.

Cuanto más íntima es una relación, más tiempo requiere estar juntos a solas.
